Quick Question

Dear fellow bloggers,
I was on this blog and came across this:

Do you ever experience writer jealousy? Ever read something and instead of appreciating it you thought “man I could have written that!” What are you more envious of a person that writes in your same genre better than you or someone that is able to create something you cannot?

Who do you have writer’s envy for?

I have “writer envy” for three people Raymond E. Feist, Robert Jordan (RIP), and W.E.B. Griffin. I will also say that whoever wrote the bible did an ok job as well. Thanks for the pingback and it is a good question. Who do you have writer envy for? -OM

  2. Salam! Very interesting!

To be honest, I mostly hold myself against my own standard – I want my next article to be better and more refined than the next. When I see other writing/perspectives, I try to use those as inspiration. I also appreciate anyone who uses the web for da’wah because being a writer with your work out there is not easy. I think we Muslim writers really have to stick together & support each other! No time for envy I say. 🙂

    • You are right about using the appreciation of others’ works as inspiration instead of viewing them with jealousy. Competing with oneself to get better is a good way to go especially as we are better off being ourselves than being a wannabe. Jazakillah khayr for your insight.

Oh yes … I remember back then when I was elected as the sports editor of a campus publication. I envied a journalist who writes sports news exquisitely than I do. Oh well, I write features better than him, and we are okay with that now (no more hard feelings, yeah)!

      • She is not but it’s in her blood somewhere but her children are. She married an Irish man and she wrote the book to explain to them ‘what’ they are before they get a brutal awakening from the world ;). A lot of people envy mixed kids without even realizing that they deal with their own issues of not-being associated with any race…

  4. I was right then, about Garcelle. Mixed races are often envied by the darker races due to the preference for a lighter skin tone. I did learn of how difficult it is for them to be accepted by their fairer families. Sad & pretty petty in my opinion.
I don’t know if you have written a post on your heritage yet, Papatia, but I would love to read your feelings on the subject. 🙂
