[Qur’an in Ramadan 4:Q3.113-Q4.57]
You may or may not have the nasty habit of telling little white lies or big black lies, as the case may be. Your weakness may be in using profanity or cussing people out. You may be partial to backbiting or watering the grapevine at the office, or perhaps, be well-known for your caustic tongue when someone invokes your ire.
White lies like ‘I am almost there’ when you are just getting up from bed, ‘just parking my car’ when you’ve only just had a shower or those innocuous lies you tell to compliment your boss and curry his favour; make a very strong effort to stop them today.
Be very aware of your utterances and if asked a question you would rather not respond to with a lie, change the topic, deflect the question or simply smile. Most people will get the hint. If they insist, reply that you would rather not answer the question or join in the gossip or whatever.
I am not preaching being sanctimonious but if you have nothing positive and honest to say, stay silent or better still, keep your lips moist with various adhkaar that will bring you immense rewards this Holy Month and beyond.
And if you do fall in error, fine yourself by giving a stipulated amount of money in sadaqah as you return home today. Or you could get a jar to keep the money if you frequently make errors, then give the money out in charity at the end of the month.
Sahl bin Sa’d narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: Whoever guarantees me (the chastity of) what is between his legs and what is between his jaws (i.e his tongue), I guarantee him Paradise. – Sahih Bukhari 6807
