PRIDE Q7.11-13, Q38.74-8

One of the stories that pops into my mind when I hear ‘A pride comes before a fall’ is that of Iblis; what a plunge he had! His pride in the quality of his creation with respect to that of Adam caused his downfall. He had an inflated ego and probably thought it was in his place to be prostrated to, not to prostrate.
I will not dabble into the murky waters of what a jinn was doing with the host of angels commanded to bow to Adam (ASW) because Allah knows best. I am simply going to talk about how pride was the first sin leading to disobedience.

Shaytan was created of a smokeless flame as jinns were, while Adam was created from black altered clay. He had probably never disobeyed Allah previously but haughtiness made him do so. Pride causes us to err in so many ways we ordinarily would not have. This simple act caused Shaytan to lose so much and can cost us Jannah.

Book 1, Hadith 171 of Sahih Muslim narrated on the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud says: the Prophet (SAW) said: He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise. A man (listening) said: verily, a person loves that that his dress should be fine and his shoes should be fine. He (SAW) remarked: Verily, Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.

Racism, ethnocentricity, nationalism, tribalism are all forms of pride. It may be cool to act standoffish and snobbish but is it really worth losing Al-Jannah for? Our watchword should be humility.

May Allah erase arrogance from our hearts.
