I love animations! In Kung-Fu Panda, Master Ugwe said, ‘One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.’ How true! Part of the articles of faith includes ‘Belief in Destiny’ so a true believer must believe that whatever happens is the will of Allah; be it good or bad.
Narrated `Abdullah bin Mas’ud: Allah’s Messenger (SAW), the true and truly inspired said, “(The matter of the Creation of) a human being is put together in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period, and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his (i.e. the new creature’s) deeds, his livelihood, his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him. So, a man amongst you may do (good deeds till there is only a cubit between him and Paradise and then what has been written for him decides his behaviour and he starts doing (evil) deeds characteristic of the people of the (Hell) Fire. And similarly a man amongst you may do (evil) deeds till there is only a cubit between him and the (Hell) Fire, and then what has been written for him decides his behavior, and he starts doing deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 3208
What we will become, the duration of our lives, even the events in the lives of the generations to come have all been inscribed. It’s like you just watched a movie to the end and at the credits roll, you decide to rewind it to a certain point for it to play back. The outcome of the movie will remain unchanged. It has already been recorded. No matter how you yell at the actor not to drink the poisoned wine, he will still drink it.
Does that mean we should just throw our hands up in disgust and say ‘What the heck? Am going to party hard anyway. It has probably been written that I’ll make Jannah’? If we had a child with sickle-cell disease, would we say, ‘You are going to die soon anyway so stay at home till you do. No need acquiring education’? Would we walk to work from home saying, ‘If Allah wishes me to reach work early, I will’? No, we can’t do these because we do not KNOW for sure what the future will bring. We do not know for sure what our destiny is. In the light of this, we keep praying and being devout; we keep striving toward our goals with the hope that this is our script and it will have a happy ending, insha Allah.
May Allah keep us steadfast on His Deen.
